We Tested Every Denture Adhesive We Could Find (Most Let Us Down)

Every box says the same thing. Strong hold. All day. Eat what you want.

We wanted to know if any of it was true.

So we tested 14 denture adhesives with real people over 8 weeks. All of them had worn dentures for at least a year. All of them had a drawer full of tubes they had already given up on.

Most of the products failed. Some held for a while and then quit at lunch. A few made food taste like chemicals. Two were so bad our testers stopped using them in the first week.

Only 4 held up. And one worked better than the other 13 put together.

Here is what we found.

1. OVERALL BEST: VIGORO BARRIER SEAL

Title
Title

Hold: 94%

Comfort: 96%

Price: 29.95$

Overall: A+

Vigoro was the clear winner, and it was not close.

We heard about it from a woman in our test group who had worn dentures for 13 years. She said it was the best thing she had ever put in her mouth. We thought she was being dramatic. She was not.

But the hold is not what made us pay attention. It was the reason it works.

Most adhesives are built to grip. That is all they do. They stick the plate to your gums and they stop there. So the plate stays put, but there is still a tiny gap all the way around the edge. Food gets in through that gap. That is why you can go a whole meal without your teeth moving and still find rice under your plate.

Vigoro closes that gap. It grips and it seals, at the same time, in one squeeze.

One of our testers ate a caramel candy with pecans in it. Sticky and full of hard little pieces. It is about the worst thing you can eat with dentures. Nothing got underneath.

Another tester went from 7 in the morning to 11 at night without the hold slipping once.

Thousands of people have tried it. Right now the company is running 95% off so more people can test it themselves.

2. Super Poligrip

Title

Hold: 71%

Comfort: 68%

Price: $

Overall

Value: B-

The big name. Almost every one of our testers had used it at some point.

On the top plate it did fine. Some testers got a full day out of it and were happy.

The bottom plate was a different story. Two to three hours and then it started to let go. Hot coffee made it worse. One tester said she could feel it loosening before she could see it.

Food still got under the plate. That happened even on days when the teeth never moved at all.

It is not a bad product. It just does one job and calls it finished.

3. Fixodent

Title

Hold: 66%

Comfort: 52%

Price: $ Overall

Value: C+

Fixodent held well enough for most of our testers. The problem was what came with it.

Three testers said food started tasting strange. One stopped enjoying her meals and did not connect it to the adhesive for months.

The bigger complaint was cleanup. Getting it off the gums at the end of the day took 10 to 15 minutes of scraping at the sink. Every single night.

One tester said: "It works, but I dread taking it off."

You fix one problem and you buy a new one.

4. Cushion Grip

Title

Hold: 61%

Comfort: 74%

Price: $$

Overall

Value: C

This one frustrated our testers more than any other product in the test.

Some days it was perfect. Genuinely perfect. Better than anything else they had used.

Then on a random Tuesday it just did not work. Same amount. Same way of putting it on. No reason anyone could find.

You can plan around a product that is always a little weak. You learn how it behaves and you work with it. You cannot plan around one that surprises you.

One tester put it simply: "I can't trust it."

5. Sea-Bond Strips

Title

Hold: 54%

Comfort: 44%

Price: $$

Overall Value: C-

The strips are clean and easy to put on. That is the good part.

The taste was the problem. Two testers stopped in the first week. One said everything she ate had a flavor she could not wash out.

Hold was moderate at best and dropped fast once anything hot went in.

For some people, this one made things worse instead of better.

WHY VIGORO IS OUR #1 PICK

Title

Once you see what happened to our testers, the winner makes sense.

These were not new denture wearers. Most had been at this for years. One had a basket in her bathroom with six half-used tubes in it. Another had spent hundreds of dollars trying to find something that worked.

By week three, they had stopped talking about hold. They were talking about other things.

One woman ate at a restaurant and ordered what she actually wanted instead of the softest thing on the menu. One had corn on the cob with her grandson for the first time in six years. One went to a birthday party and did not think about her teeth once the whole night.

That last one matters more than it sounds. Most people who wear dentures run a little check in their head before every meal. Can I eat this. Will I need to fix it after. Should I sit near the bathroom. It happens so often you stop noticing you are doing it.

Vigoro is the first thing our testers used that made that check stop.

The reason is the seal.

Every other adhesive we tested was built to grip. Grip is easy to measure and easy to print on a box, so that is what companies built. But grip was never the part that was failing. Your teeth were staying put. Food was getting in around the edge.

Vigoro grips and closes the edge in the same step. That is the whole difference.

Here is how it goes on a normal day.

Morning coffee, no movement. Lunch with something crunchy in it, nothing gets under. Mid afternoon, no need to run to the bathroom and fix anything. Dinner out with people, and you get through the whole meal without checking.

Two honest things before you buy.

Top plates hold 8 to 12 hours. Bottom plates hold 3 to 8. Bottom gums have almost nothing to grip, and no adhesive on the market has solved that. Anyone printing 12 hours without saying which plate they mean is setting you up.

Also, taking it off still takes a few minutes at the sink. Warm water helps. We would rather tell you now than have you find out on day three.

This is not magic. It is just the first denture adhesive that does the job everyone assumed it was already doing.

Thousands of people have found out what happens when the food finally stays out.
